Although around 18% of our citizens, or four million people, live with disabilities, discrimination and stigma based on disability continue to impact people across Australia. From inaccessible stores and venues, to discrimination in schools and the workplace, living with a disability means constantly navigating an often-unaccommodating world.
If you or someone you care for has been affected by disability-based discrimination, you may feel confused, shocked, and upset. At Life Resolutions, we offer quality NDIS counselling to help you or your loved one process these difficult emotions and find new strategies to cope.
How Discrimination Affects Emotional Wellness and Mental Health
Despite discrimination due to disability being illegal in Australia, those who live with a disability continue to bear the brunt of outdated stereotypes and limiting beliefs. The Centre of Research Excellence in Disability and Health (CRE-DH) study on disability-based discrimination indicated that 14% of Australians experiencing disability-based discrimination in the past year, while for people aged 15 to 24, the numbers were over 20%.
The CRE-DH research also reported a link between disability-based discrimination and lowered health outcomes – the study reported that the stress caused by discrimination also led to physical health issues such as raised blood pressure. Additionally, because discrimination often occurs in work or study environments, people with disabilities are further impacted by socioeconomic disadvantage. The combination of these factors mean that not only are Australians with disabilities more likely to experience mental health concerns but are also less likely to receive accessible and appropriate support.
If you or someone you love has a disability, it is important to think about the impact of stigma and discrimination on mental health. The support of a qualified counsellor can help you manage difficult feelings and situations and assist you on your path towards happiness and wellness.
