What is stress?
Stress is a part of the body’s ‘fight or flight’ reaction to specific stimuli or events. This allows our body to act quickly in certain situations and protect you against any potential threat. However, in modern life, stress can be caused by work, school, social and other life challenges and therefore is prolonged.
The Effects of Stress
Stress and prolonged stress can affect the mind and body. Prolonged stress can cause:
- high blood pressure
- increased rates of obesity (due to decreasing sleep and exercise and increasing appetite)
- increase chances of developing anxiety, depression and addictive behaviours.
Stress has detrimental effects on one’s mental and physical wellbeing.
How to Decrease Stress
A Harvard University study sound that deep abdominal breathing, focus on soothing words, visualization of tranquil scenes and yoga can help reduce stress. Physical activity was also found to reduce stress.
Additionally, the study found that seeking support is important to minimising the effects of stress. Support can take the form of social or professional support.
